Alicia Vikander stars as the adventurous Lara Croft who must survive on a perilous mission that will give her answers about her father's disappearance and earn her the name of tomb raider.
Warner Bros. Pictures has released another trailer for their upcoming movie based on the video game TOMB RAIDER with Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander playing the popular adventurer Lara Croft.
It seems thus far that the film is closely following in the game’s footsteps, with identical attire and Lara traveling towards a treacherous island to gain answers about the disappearance of her father, played by Dominic West. While searching for her father she runs into the villainous Mathias Vogel played by Walton Goggins, who is part of the deadly Trinity organization. I was very excited to hear the latest trailer bring up Trinity, as the organization plays a big role in the recent video games. However, my favorite part of the trailer was the song they used which was a different rendition of "Survivor" by Destiny's Child.
Alicia Vikander is best known for her role in Ex Machina, where she plays a synthetic A.I. named Ava, who develops remarkable human characteristics. She won an Academy Award in 2016 with The Danish Girl, starring opposite Eddie Redmayne.
This comes from director Roar Uthaug, who was put on my radar with the Norwegian disaster film The Wave, which boasts a refreshing, humanistic focus while turning disaster film clichés on its head. Geneva Robertson-Dworet penned the script and is also the scribe for Marvel’s upcoming film, Captain Marvel.
Lara Croft is a highly intelligent, athletic archaeologist who ventures into ancient tombs and ruins around the world. Created by Core Design in 1996, the iconic character has been featured on over 1,100 magazine covers, surpassing any supermodel.
The Tomb Raider video game series was rebooted in 2013 and had a sequel in 2015 with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Both games went on to receive great praise from players and critics alike for the compelling narrative and breathtaking graphics. It was also recently announced that another Tomb Raider game will be released sometime in the next few months.
Tomb Raider hits theaters March 16, watch the trailer below.
Here is the official synopsis for Tomb Raider:
Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.
Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.
