Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander will star as Lara Croft in the forthcoming reboot of the action-adventure series Tomb Raider, it was announced Thursday.

The Danish Girl actress Alicia Vikander will star as Lara Croft in the TOMB RAIDER REBOOT from MGM, Warner Bros., and GK Films, it was announced Thursday. Roar Uthuag is set to direct, while Geneva Robertson-Dworet penned the most recent draft of the script.

The film is based on the best-selling video game series Tomb Raider, first released by Eidos in 1996. The story centers on Lara Croft, an archaeologist and adventurer who travels the globe searching for lost artifacts and infiltrating dangerous tombs and ruins. The reboot is expected to adapt the storyline of the 2013 Tomb Raider installment, which is a gritty origin story detailing the explorer's first expedition.

Graham King, who acquired Tomb Raider in 2011 from Square Enix, will produce through his GK Films, with Denis O'Sullivan overseeing. Cassidy Lange is overseeing for MGM, while Drew Crevello will handle for Warner Bros.

The project has been in development for some time, with a long list of actresses considered for the role, including Daisy Ridley and Emily Blunt. Vikander, however, was always the first choice, according to those close to the project. The screenplay has undergone several revisions over the years, with Evan Daugherty and Marti Noxon among the numerous writers assigned to the script. A previous Tomb Raider prequel project was set up at Warner Bros. with Lin Pictures producing and Megan Fox starring, but the feature rights went to Square Enix after it bought Eidos in 2009.

Vikander, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Danish Girl, steps into the role made famous by Angelina Jolie in two previous Tomb Raider films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The Cradle of Life. Vikander, who also starred in last year's sleeper hit, Ex Machina, will appear opposite Matt Damon in the upcoming Jason Bourne.

She is repped by UTA and Tavistock Wood Management.
